Hello Tony,

my initial email to a specialist toxicologist resulted in a "no answer". I have since sent out a dozen or so emails to various specialsits and only received one confirmation, and no information. But I'll keep at it and post when I get news to pass on.

I have been turning Yew for the past few months and the toxin question is always in the back of my mind and to a degree, distracting me... I would be delighted to finally get a definitive answer to this age old question.. Please keep the quest going...

I watched that one too. Another thought provoking program. As was the The Great Contemporary Art Bubble Update, a BBC4 program.

It almost feels like a revival at the moment.

Thank you, Philip. I'm glad you liked it.

Thanks for the inside track on Potters' art, John!

The BBC can be a boon if you pick and choose.

Sometimes I wish I had BBC. This sounds interesting.
The shush-you-know-what debate has been around for a long time. I remember it raging when I was a potter. The kiln disasters were often labeled "art" since disasters off the wheel could be recycled.
I like the definition - the intention of the artist. In my opinion there are a lot of woodturnings that should be recycled to warm the wood stove but are instead labeled "art".

Hello Christopher, thanks for the comments. There isn't any gilding, but the colour of the oak is almost gold, so maybe the flash has brought that out? I have finished the bottom now. Re-turned to remove the recess, details added, sanded and oiled. I'm quite pleased with the finished bowl now. But good oak burr always helps!

Personally, I like the color, especially how you have it transition and stop near the edge of the rim. The picture doesn't show it so well, but is there any gold guilding at the inner lip before the bowl feature? Do you plan to finish the bottom?

A Roman antique comes to mind with what you have produced.

Not yew wood toxicity, but yew berry - they're incredibly toxic but it's only the pip that actually contains the toxins. Yesterday I ate the flesh of one after squeezing out the pip and, as I'd been told, it was delicious.
Not to be recommended in high amounts, but worth trying at least once...
