It’s been a week of new commissions. Some interesting ones too.
One, well two actually, for a disabled access sailing club, came with a box full of large chunks of wood from HMS Victory. I have no problem with this, and I know there was wood from the Victory…but how much? I’ve heard claims of two containers loaded with it bought by one individual, another container by another individual, then there are the official “Victory gift” suppliers, and then the mountains of “Victory wood” available from many sources on the internet…
How big was this ship? The size of Poland?

I think they walk on deck with some lumps of oak, turn round and walk off and it has magically become “Victory Oak”.
Shame on them for replacing the oak they have taken out with Iroko too.

Hi Andy,
It is a very large ship – a couple of interesting facts being :-
Constructed from approx.6000 trees with 90%being oak.
This equates to a woodland of 100 acres.
The ship displaces 3500 tons.
So I am not surpised there is a lot of it avaialable, but I also suspect a lot of claims are false.
When the dockyard disposes of the wood a certificate is issued
Regards
Ken
